Looking After Yourself at Christmas

Christmas can look like a time that’s meant to be happy, exciting and full of fun. For some people, it is. But for many young people, Christmas can also feel stressful, overwhelming, lonely or confusing — and that’s completely okay. There is no “right” way to feel at Christmas. What matters most is looking after yourself.

Why Christmas can feel hard

At this time of year, routines change. School or college finishes, families may spend more time together, and there can be extra pressure to feel happy. You’re not alone if you are…

  • Missing someone
  • Feeling overwhelmed by noise, crowds or expectations
  • Worried about family tensions
  • Feeling lonely while everyone else seems busy
  • Struggling with changes to your normal routine
Small ways to care for yourself

Self-care doesn’t have to be big or complicated. It’s about noticing what you need and giving yourself permission to meet that need. Here are some gentle ideas you might like to try:

1.Keep some routine

Even a small routine can help you feel steadier when everything else feels different. It could be…

  • Getting up at a similar time each day
  • Eating regular meals
  • Going outside for a short walk

2. Take breaks when you need them

Going to another room, putting headphones on, or spending time on your own is not rude — it’s self-respect. It’s okay to step away from:

  • Busy rooms
  • Family conversations
  • Social events

3. Be kind to your feelings

You might feel happy one moment and sad or angry the next. Feelings don’t need fixing — they need acknowledging. Try saying to yourself: “It makes sense that I feel like this.”

4. Do something just for you

You deserve moments that feel calm or enjoyable. This could be:

  • Watching a favourite film or YouTube channel
  • Drawing, gaming, baking or listening to music
  • Writing down your thoughts or worries
  • Resting — doing nothing counts too

5. Stay Connected in Your Own Way

If things feel heavy, sharing a little can make a big difference. Connection doesn’t have to mean big social plans. It might be:

  • Messaging a friend
  • Spending time with a pet
  • Talking to someone you trust
  • Reaching out to a support service

If Christmas feels really hard…Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low or unsafe, it’s important to get support. You don’t have to cope on your own. You can:

  • Talk to a trusted adult
  • Contact a helpline if you need to talk right away
