Frequently asked questions

What does counselling look like?

Once a referral has been submitted, we will get back to you within 72 hours. We will then invite you to book an assessment up to 2 weeks in advance. Once the assessment has taken place, we will then match you with a counsellor who will contact you to book in your sessions.

Counselling consists of 6–12 sessions, each lasting 50 minutes and taking place online via video link sent straight to your phone/email.

Sessions take place once a week, on the same day and time each week to provide consistency and routine.

For counselling to be effective, the child or young person must want to attend counselling and have a basic understanding of what counselling involves.

Parents or carers must speak with their child or young person and obtain their consent before making a referral.

How do I know if this service is right for me/young person?

Sometimes during an assessment, it becomes apparent that we are not the right service for the child or young person. If this is the case, then, if possible, we will signpost you to another support service.

When considering counselling for primary school–aged children, it is important to think about whether an online service is the right fit for your child. Our counselling takes place online and involves talking with a therapist via a computer or device. Some younger children may find this format challenging, particularly if they are naturally shy or not comfortable speaking to someone they do not know through a screen.

What’s the purpose of counselling?

Counselling is not designed to challenge or correct behaviour simply because it is difficult or unwanted. It is a supportive process that helps young people explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe space.

Who are the counsellors?

We’re proud to work with a growing team of experienced counsellors. You can view their profiles and learn more about their backgrounds by clicking here. All counsellors hold a minimum Level 4 qualification.

Our team of therapists are fully trained to work with children and young people. Sessions are guided by goals identified by the child or young person themselves, helping them work towards positive changes that are meaningful to them.

At the initial assessment we can’t guarantee a specific gender for the assessment; however, you’re welcome to request a preference for ongoing sessions. We will match you with a counsellor best suited to work with you while considering your preferences.

What will be achieved?

Before counselling begins, there is a 50-minute assessment. We assess the child or young person to gain information regarding their family relationships and general background.

They should have a clear idea of what they would like to achieve through counselling, and we work with them to set three achievable goals. These goals help guide the sessions and provide a focus for the support offered.
